Why has my AdBlue light come on?
There are two very different reasons, and the dashboard does not always distinguish between them clearly.
The first is simply a low AdBlue level. This usually appears early — often a few thousand miles before there is a problem — and clears within a short drive after a proper refill.
The second is a system fault. The vehicle has detected that AdBlue is not being dosed correctly, that emissions readings are outside tolerance, or that a component or circuit has failed. Adding fluid will not clear this one, because fluid was never the problem.
I filled the AdBlue but the light is still on — why?
This is the single most common thing we get called about, and there are several honest explanations.
The level sensor may not have registered the fill — some vehicles need a certain quantity added in one go, with the ignition off, then a drive cycle before the reading updates. Others need at least 5 to 10 litres before they acknowledge the refill at all.
The AdBlue may have been contaminated, out of date, or the wrong fluid entirely. AdBlue degrades, particularly if stored warm or opened months earlier, and the quality sensor will reject it.
Or the warning was never about the level. If a fault has been stored — a dosing failure, a NOx plausibility fault, a pressure fault — the warning stays until the fault is fixed and the memory cleared correctly.
Can I keep driving?
In most cases yes, for now — but the situation gets worse rather than better. Vehicles typically escalate through stages: an amber warning, then a warning with a mileage countdown, then reduced power, then a refusal to restart once the engine is switched off.
The critical point is that the restriction applies at the next start, not while you are driving. If your dashboard is showing a countdown, the safest thing is to keep the vehicle somewhere it can be worked on before you switch it off — and call us rather than risk being immobilised somewhere inconvenient.
AdBlue countdown and "no engine start in 500 miles"
The countdown is a legally mandated inducement strategy. When emissions control is not working, the manufacturer must progressively restrict the vehicle. The number shown is the remaining distance before the engine will not restart.
Adding fluid clears the countdown only if low fluid caused it. If a component fault caused it, the countdown continues down regardless of how much AdBlue you pour in.
Clearing the message repeatedly with a code reader is not a repair. The vehicle will re-run its plausibility checks and the countdown will return, usually within a drive cycle or two — and each reset makes the diagnostic picture muddier for whoever eventually has to fix it.
Common causes behind a persistent AdBlue warning
- NOx sensor failure or a NOx signal the ECU considers implausible (fault codes in the P20xx and P22xx families, including P20E8)
- AdBlue pump unable to build or hold pressure
- Blocked or crystallised dosing injector
- Tank level or quality sensor failure — the car thinks the tank is empty when it is not
- Heater circuit failure, common after cold weather, where frozen AdBlue cannot be thawed
- Wiring, earth and connector corrosion, particularly on vans and underbody-mounted components
- SCR control module or software calibration faults
- Genuine catalyst efficiency loss on higher-mileage vehicles

A stored fault code names a circuit, not a culprit. A NOx code can be caused by the sensor, its wiring, a connector full of water, an exhaust leak upstream, poor dosing, or a control module that has lost calibration. Replacing the sensor on the strength of the code alone is how people end up paying twice.
We test live data, dosing behaviour, pressure build, heater circuits and sensor plausibility before recommending any part. If a component genuinely has failed, you will see the evidence for it.
