What P204F actually means
P204F is a plausibility code. The control module compares what it commanded the AdBlue system to do with what it actually measured — dosing quantity, pressure, consumption rate and NOx conversion — and flags that the numbers do not agree.
Because it is deliberately broad, P204F is almost never useful on its own. What matters is which other codes were set with it, in what order, and what the freeze-frame data recorded at the moment it stored.
Symptoms drivers actually report
- Engine management light with a general AdBlue or emissions message
- Countdown warnings that appear, disappear and come back
- AdBlue consumption that seems far too high or suspiciously low
- Several codes stored at once and a garage unsure which to chase
- The fault clearing on a long motorway run then returning around town
- Limp mode or reduced power once the countdown expires
What really causes P204F
- Dosing quantity that does not match what was commanded
- A partly blocked or poorly atomising dosing injector
- Pressure faults in the delivery line — often stored with P20E8
- NOx sensor drift making conversion look wrong — often stored with P20EE
- Poor quality, diluted or contaminated AdBlue in the tank
- A level or quality sensor reporting incorrectly
- Exhaust leaks upstream of the downstream NOx sensor
- Software or calibration mismatch after a previous repair or module swap

A fault code names a circuit, not a culprit. The same code can be stored because of a sensor, its wiring, a water-filled connector, an exhaust leak upstream, poor dosing, contaminated fluid, or a control module that has lost its calibration. Fitting the part the code appears to name is how people end up paying twice.

Why the code order matters
When a vehicle arrives with P204F plus two or three other codes, the sequence tells the story. A pressure code that set first with P204F following it points at the delivery side. A NOx code that set first points at sensing or conversion. P204F alone, with clean live data, often points at fluid quality or a previous repair that was never properly re-calibrated.
