AdBlue Pump Fault? Test It Before You Replace It

24/7 mobile AdBlue, SCR & NOx assistance — we come to you

AdBlue pumps do fail — but a pressure fault code can equally come from a blocked injector, a restricted line or a wiring fault. Here is what the pump does, how it fails, and how we tell the difference.

What the AdBlue pump does

The pump — often part of a combined delivery or dosing module mounted on or near the tank — draws AdBlue from the tank, builds it to a controlled pressure, and holds that pressure so the dosing injector can meter accurate quantities into the exhaust. It also reverse-purges the line after shutdown so residual fluid does not sit and crystallise.

AdBlue pump fault symptoms

  • AdBlue or emissions warning light with pressure-related fault codes
  • Pressure build timeout errors stored in the SCR module
  • Reduced or zero dosing, leading to NOx conversion faults
  • Countdown or no-restart inducement warnings
  • Unusual pump noise, or no priming sound at all when the ignition is switched on
  • AdBlue leaks or white crystalline deposits around the module
  • Faults that appear only in cold weather, where a heater or frozen fluid is involved

Why diagnosis comes before replacement

A pressure build failure means the system could not reach target pressure. The pump is one candidate. So is a blocked injector that the pump cannot push through, a crystallised or kinked delivery line, a suction-side blockage, a failed pressure sensor reporting nonsense, or a supply voltage problem at the pump module.

We test the pump's actual output, run forced dosing routines, watch pressure build and decay in live data, and check the electrical supply and control side. That tells us whether the pump has failed or whether it is a victim of something else — and replacing a pump into a blocked system simply fails again.

Can an AdBlue pump be repaired?

Sometimes. Where the problem is crystallisation, a filter, or a serviceable part of the delivery module, cleaning and servicing can restore correct operation. Where the motor, internal seals or the integrated control electronics have failed, replacement of the module is the honest answer. Which one applies is a diagnosis, not a guess — and we tell you which it is before any money is spent on parts.

Diagnosis first. Parts second.

A stored fault code names a circuit, not a culprit. A NOx code can be caused by the sensor, its wiring, a connector full of water, an exhaust leak upstream, poor dosing, or a control module that has lost calibration. Replacing the sensor on the strength of the code alone is how people end up paying twice.

We test live data, dosing behaviour, pressure build, heater circuits and sensor plausibility before recommending any part. If a component genuinely has failed, you will see the evidence for it.

Common questions

+What are the symptoms of a failing AdBlue pump?

Pressure-related fault codes, dosing failures, AdBlue warning lights and countdowns, missing or abnormal pump priming noise, and sometimes leaks or white crystalline deposits around the delivery module.

+Can an AdBlue pump be repaired rather than replaced?

Sometimes — where crystallisation, a filter or a serviceable component is the cause. Where the motor or integrated electronics have failed, the module needs replacing.

+How long does an AdBlue pump last?

There is no fixed service life. Failures correlate more with contaminated or degraded fluid, short-journey use and cold-weather cycling than with mileage alone.

+Does a pressure fault code always mean the pump?

No, and this is the single most common misdiagnosis in AdBlue work. A blocked injector, restricted line or faulty pressure sensor produces the same code with a healthy pump.
