What a NOx sensor does
A NOx sensor measures nitrogen oxide concentration in the exhaust gas. Most modern diesels have two: one upstream of the SCR catalyst and one downstream. The ECU compares the two readings to work out how much NOx the catalyst is converting, and adjusts AdBlue dosing accordingly.
Each sensor has its own small control module built into the loom, plus a heater element that brings the sensing tip up to operating temperature. Both the module and the heater fail more often than the sensing element itself.
Symptoms of a faulty NOx sensor
- AdBlue or emissions warning light, often with a countdown
- Engine management light with NOx-related codes (P20xx, P22xx families)
- Reduced power or limp mode
- Increased AdBlue consumption, or the system dosing constantly
- Poor fuel economy
- Failed emissions readings
- Intermittent warnings that appear in cold or wet weather and clear later
Why a NOx fault code does not prove the sensor is faulty
This matters, because NOx sensors are not cheap and they are frequently fitted for nothing.
A downstream NOx sensor reporting high NOx is doing its job correctly if the catalyst genuinely is not converting — because dosing has failed, because the injector is blocked, or because the catalyst itself is spent. Fit a new sensor and it will report exactly the same thing.
Equally, a NOx signal can be lost to a corroded connector, a chafed loom, a poor earth, or an exhaust leak drawing in air upstream of the sensor. All of those produce sensor-shaped fault codes with a perfectly healthy sensor.
We check heater circuit operation, live sensor values against expected ranges, plausibility between upstream and downstream readings, dosing quantity, and the wiring, before condemning anything.
Can a NOx sensor be cleaned?
Not reliably. The sensing element is a delicate ceramic structure and cleaning agents damage it. Soot fouling is occasionally reversible in the very short term, but a sensor that is contaminated enough to cause a fault is usually a sensor at the end of its life. Where the sensor genuinely has failed, replacement is the correct repair.
What we will not do is sell you a sensor to solve a problem that a sensor will not solve.
NOx sensor replacement
Replacement is not always a bolt-off, bolt-on job. Sensors seize into the exhaust, looms are routed through awkward paths, and on many vehicles the new sensor requires coding or an adaption reset before the ECU will accept it. Fitting a sensor without the coding step leaves the fault exactly where it was.

Mercedes vehicles generate the highest search volume for NOx sensor problems in the UK, and it matches what we see — Sprinter, Vito, C-Class, E-Class and GLC models are all regulars, often with the downstream sensor and its module. BMW, Audi, VW, Ford Transit and Peugeot/Citroën commercial vehicles all feature too.
