What the countdown is counting

It's a distance allowance, not a timer. The vehicle lets you carry on for a set number of miles so you can get the fault repaired, then prevents a restart once you stop.

Crucially, you can keep driving on it — you just can't restart once it reaches zero and the engine is switched off. That's why people get stranded at a fuel station or on a driveway rather than mid-journey.

Two different countdowns

  • Low fluid countdown — the tank is genuinely low; a correct top-up clears it after a short drive
  • System fault countdown — the SCR system has a stored fault; topping up changes nothing and it must be diagnosed

If topping up didn't clear it

That's the clearest possible signal that the fault is in the system, not the fluid level. A sensor, the pump, the injector, wiring or the module needs testing.

+Will topping up AdBlue stop the countdown?

Only if the countdown was triggered by a genuinely low tank. If it was triggered by a system fault — NOx sensor, pump, heater, injector or AdBlue quality — the countdown keeps running after a top-up until the fault is diagnosed and repaired.

+Can the countdown be reset without fixing the fault?

Clearing codes without repairing the cause usually brings the countdown straight back, often with fewer miles. We diagnose the underlying fault first, repair it, then clear the inducement and confirm in live data.

+What should I do when the countdown is low?

Avoid switching off somewhere you cannot leave the vehicle. Contact us with the registration, the exact dashboard message and your location so we can arrange diagnosis before it reaches zero.

+Can I reset the countdown myself?

Not legitimately. Clearing the count without fixing the cause only delays it — the system re-tests within a few drive cycles and the warning returns.

+Will it stop while I'm driving?

The lockout prevents a restart after the engine is switched off; it doesn't cut the engine mid-journey. You may still see reduced power once the count expires.
