How the Mercedes-Benz AdBlue system works
Covers: Sprinter, Vito, V-Class, C-, E- and GLE-Class BlueTEC diesels.
Mercedes BlueTEC vehicles split the SCR system across the engine ECU and a separate AdBlue control unit, with a heated pump/tank assembly and two NOx sensors. The countdown logic is strict: once the system decides dosing is not effective, the vehicle counts down to a restart lockout.
Common Mercedes-Benz AdBlue faults we see first
- AdBlue heater and pump assembly failures in the tank, a common Sprinter and Vito complaint
- Upstream and downstream NOx sensor failures logging P2200-series and P229F codes
- "Refill AdBlue — no start in X km" messages that remain after a full tank
- SCR efficiency faults (P20EE) caused by dosing or sensor plausibility problems
What we check before quoting
We read the engine ECU and the AdBlue control unit separately, confirm the software version and check for stored immobiliser or tamper flags before quoting.
Send us the registration and the exact dashboard message or fault code by WhatsApp. We confirm the ECU type and whether the job is suitable before arranging a visit.
Who this is for
We typically see ex-fleet Sprinters converted to track support, race transporters and export vans, plus Mercedes 4x4s used only on private land.
Important — legal position
Disabling or removing a working emissions control system on a vehicle used on UK public roads is not lawful and will fail an MOT. This service is only for vehicles used off-road, in competition, on private land or exported. Road-registered vehicles in UK use get diagnosis and repair instead.
